Poster exhibition “Homage to Toulouse-Lautrec”

100 posters for Toulouse-Lautrec

The exhibition honours French artist Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. It presents the posters created by 100 graphic design artists in the winter of 2001, for the exhibition “Le Nouveau Salon des Cents” at the Centre Pompidou in Paris. The exhibition was held in commemoration of the 100-year anniversary from the artist’s death.

The organisers had asked the participants to incorporate in their posters the phrase Le nouveau Salon des Cent. Exposition Internationale d’affiches. Hommage ou Ode à Toulouse Lautrec. (The New Salon des Cent. International Poster Exhibition. Homage or Ode to Toulouse Lautrec). The artists were given absolute freedom in selecting and executing their themes.

The exhibits

The exhibition includes:

• 100 posters created by top graphic design artists from all over the world in honour of Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec in 2001.
• 5 original posters by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec and 1 by Pierre Bonnard from the collection of the National Gallery-Alexandros Soutsos Museum.
• 16 posters designed by 16 Greek artists 16 years later, according to the 2001 exhibition specifications.
• Portraits of Toulouse-Lautrec created by students of the Vakalo Art & Design College, using different techniques in sketchbooks. It was a very imaginative painting experimentation with paper textures and colour shades.

Publications

For the purposes of the exhibition, the magazine GR Design designed a special tribute issue with different covers, using the posters of the participating artists.

Lectures

On the occasion of the exhibition, a lecture was delivered by Danièle Devynck, the director of the Toulouse-Lautrec Museum in Albi, the birth town of the artist. The lecture was titled “Toulouse-Lautrec affichiste” (The posters of Toulouse-Lautrec).
