Banknote Museum activity review, 2022-2023

Educational programmes, guided tours for schools, activities and partnerships with educational bodies prove that the Banknote Museum of Ionian Bank actively participates in the educational community.

Strong interest by Greek schools

Corfu

784 students and 67 teachers from primary and junior high schools on Corfu attended the educational programme “Paper Money – The Greek Banknote”, hosted at the Banknote Museum of Ionian Bank. The programme has been approved by the Greek Ministry of Education and Religious Affairs.

Through the programme, students:

• Got to know the history of Greek banknotes.
• Sharpened their creative skills.
• Cultivated their social skills and team spirit through group activities.

Moreover, on 17 and 18 May 2023 the Banknote Museum of Ionian Bank celebrated the International Museum Day 2023 with an educational initiative on “Coins and Biodiversity – Museum and the Environment”. Students from primary schools on Corfu and their teachers attended the activities.

Rest of Greece

6,247 students from 103 schools across Greece attended guided tours at the Banknote Museum of Ionian Bank. Greece’s senior high schools showed keen interest in one of the most important museums of its kind in Greece.

For example, the Banknote Museum of Ionian Bank was visited by schools from:

• Attica
• Thessaloniki, Serres, Kavala, Pieria, Pella
• Evros
• Achaia and Ilia

Through the banknotes and their depictions, students had the opportunity to learn about the most significant moments in the numismatic history of the modern Greek State. Meanwhile, Coin-o-rama, the digital application created by the Alpha Bank Numismatic Collection, gave students the chance to:

• Discover metal coins from different historical periods.
• Observe iconography and inscriptions on the coins.
• Learn about historical figures.

The Banknote Museum supports the academic community

During the 2022-2023 winter semester, the Banknote Museum, in partnership with the Ionian University Department of History and Department of Archives, Library Science and Museology, welcomed to its permanent exhibition:

• 47 university students, who became aware of significant moments of the modern Greek State and the history of the Ionian Islands through banknotes.
• 6 members of teaching staff, who delivered lectures about the economic history of Greece within the exhibition halls of the Banknote Museum.

The historical, listed building that houses the Banknote Museum captured the interest of both students and academic staff.

The educational programmes at the Banknote Museum of Ionian Bank on Corfu will continue in the new 2023-2024 school year.
