Guided tour of the National Library
As part of its activities for 2024, the Alpha Bank Library organised a guided tour of the National Library of Greece (NLG), housed in the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center (SNFCC), exclusively for Alpha Bank employees.
The tour took place on Friday 22.11.2024 at 17:30. The 19 participating employees explored the library’s halls and learned all about the content of its collections, as well as its history.
The National Library of Greece
The National Library of Greece (NLG) was officially founded in 1866, following the merger of the Public Library and the University Library.
Up until 1903, it was housed in the Orphanage of Aegina and was later transferred to the Vallianeios Mansion on Panepistimiou Street. In 2018, it relocated to its new building at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center, a development that signalled its modernisation and transition to a new era.
With around 1,000,000 items in its collections today, the NLG serves as the custodian of Greeks’ written heritage.
The NLG collections include:
- More than 5,500 manuscripts dating from the 9th to the 20th century.
- Important historical documents and archives.
- Books, magazines, newspapers, maps, microfilms and digital records spanning the entire scientific and intellectual spectrum, and dating from the 17th to the 21st century.
