The Numismatic Collection at the “Chaeronea” exhibition
The Alpha Bank Numismatic Collection is participating in the exhibition “Chaeronea, 2 August 338 BC: A day that changed the world”, loaning a coin that bears the name of Theban General Epaminondas:
- Silver stater of the Boeotian League, 4th century BCE
The legend on the coin reads ΕΠ ΠΑ, which are Epaminondas’ initials.
An exhibition honouring a major event
The exhibition is hosted at the Museum of Cycladic Art and is part of a new series of archaeological exhibitions on “Human Histories”.
The exhibition centres on the Battle of Chaeronea between the Macedonian army of Philip II and the allied Athenians and Thebans. The victory of the Macedonian army signalled the absolute dominance of Macedonia over the Eastern Mediterranean.
The Battle of Chaeronea is the first time the then 18-year-old son of Phillip II, Alexander, participated in a conflict.
